Tasiurtigiit Program

Supporting the development of Nunavimmiut Children

What is Tasiurtigiit?

Guided by the Inunnguiniq philosophy, the Tasiurtigiit program helps families seeking assistance to foster the development of their young children. Our services are centered around early childhood development and focusses on socializing, educating, and ensuring that children receive the care they need to prepare them for life.

Who is it for?

Tasiurtigiit is for children aged 0-6 who need extra support due to developmental challenges, ranging from minor to significant needs. Services can also continue during the transition to school and throughout the school integration process.

How We Help:

  • We help families, community workers, daycare educators and kindergarten teachers support children's growth, providing follow-ups, tools and guidance to overcome challenges.
  • Tasiurtigiit can connect families with professionals like physiotherapists, nutritionists, and speech therapists to support child development.

Services We Offer:

  • Personalized Support: Sessions with health care professionals to nurture children’s development.
  • Family Support: Home visits and assistance for families who request them.
  • Community Events: Outings on the land, summer activities for children and other seasonal gatherings open to all.
  • Stimulation Groups: Fun skill-building sessions at the CLSC, daycares, schools, and community organizations.

Inunnguiniq: Inuit Approach to Raising children

Inunnguiniq is the inuit way of raising well-rounded children, emphasizing respectful relationships, responsibility, and preparing children for the future. It helps children develop confidence, problem-solving skills, and a strong connection to their community. Through Inunnguiniq, children grow with resilience, creativity, and adaptability, shaping them into capable members of society. This philosophy supports lifelong development from childhood to elderhood.

Booklets Rooted in Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit

Inspired by Inuit teachings reflected in Inunnguiniq — the process of raising capable human beings — a series of four booklets was created in 2021 through a partnership between the Aqqiumavvik Society and the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH).

Designed for Inuit families and caregivers of children up to six years old, the series includes: Family Connections, Fatherhood is Forever, Growing up Healthy, and Parents as First Teachers.

Each booklet is grounded in Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and reflects traditional knowledge, cultural values, and community practices related to pregnancy, early childhood, and parenting. Together, they offer practical guidance to support early learning and healthy development, with the broader goal of strengthening Inuit families and communities for future generations.

In 2025, the NRBHSS planning and programming department partnered with the NCCIH to expand accessibility by translating the booklets into the Hudson Bay and Ungava dialects of Nunavik Inuktitut.

They are available for download on our website in English, French, and Nunavimmiutitut

Please note that printed copies are available free of charge through the NCCIH website.
